L'Auberge du Soleil is located off of the Silverado Trail -- one of California's most scenic drives -- in the heart of Napa Valley. The only downside to its secluded location and beautiful views is that you'll have to drive everywhere.

Napa lures visitors with its hundreds of wineries, excellent cuisine and picturesque rolling hills. Eating, drinking and shopping are the main activities here, so come prepared to splurge on both calories and cash.

• 1-hour-40-minute drive from San Francisco International Airport
• 7-minute drive to the heart of Rutherford
• 10-minute drive to St. Helena
• 16-minute drive to Yountville
• 23-minute drive to Calistoga
• 26-minute drive to Napa

 Bottom Line

This 50-room luxury inn is one of the most exclusive (and expensive) destinations in California wine country. Despite its intimate size, it has all the amenities of a larger resort: a 7,000-square-foot luxury spa, a lovely pool, and a Michelin-star restaurant. Views of the surrounding countryside are phenomenal, the grounds are lush and peaceful, and the homey rooms all come with huge terraces (and, in most, fireplaces and soaking tubs). It's a truly special, romantic retreat, and it's location in Rutherford is convenient for exploring Napa Valley -- but note that there's nothing within walking distance.
