Bottom Line

Secrets Royal Beach is an upscale all-inclusive resort along Punta Cana’s beautiful Bavaro Beach. Its 464 air-conditioned rooms are attractive and modern, and feature balconies with whirlpool tubs, some with ocean views. The sandy beach is wide and gorgeous and the resort's no-kid policy keeps it low key. Three pools and generous all-inclusive rates mean things can get a bit loud as the day goes on, and it's worth noting that amenities like the spa are at kid-packed Now Larimar next door. On-site features include five restaurants, multiple bars, and three pools. Reservations aren't required for dining, though wait times can be long, but Preferred Club upgrades include a private pool and dining. Travelers seeking a family-friendly option might consider the next-door Now Larimar instead, though it's less stylish.

Oyster Hotel Review

Beachy, attractive all-inclusive resort with low-key daytime vibe, but gets rowdy in afternoons and evenings

Thanks to a 2015 renovation, this Secrets outpost has a fresh and attractive look that makes a great first impression. The grounds are what you’d expect from an oceanfront resort: lush and full of palm trees and blossoming flowers. One of its three pools ambles through the grounds like a lazy river and wooden bridges pass over its azure blue water. And that's to say nothing of the beautiful -- if admittedly busy beach -- that sits next to the property. However, there are some trade-offs for this prime real estate. Notably, many of the resort's amenities -- like the spa and several dining outlets -- are at the Now Larimar next door. And while you may choose this Secrets for its adult-only policies, heading to Now Larimar means you'll be in a family-friendly resort. For those who choose to stay on the resort's grounds, mornings at Secrets are quiet and relaxed. As the day goes on, though, it gets rowdy with poolside drinking competitions and blaring music. Guests pack the big freshwater pool, and lounge chair shortages can  be an issue as guests throw towels down in the early mornings and return later to claim their spot. Visitors here are mostly thirty and older, hailing from the United States and Canada. However, we spotted plenty of Russians and Europeans during our visit. In any case, be prepared to party -- it's that kind of place.

Oceanfront setting on beautiful and busy Bavaro Beach, a 15-minute walk to nearby shops

Secrets Royal Beach is located on Bavaro Beach, one of Punta Cana’s most popular (and touristy) beaches. It’s a long, wide beach and perfect for a run or romantic evening stroll, though the daytime hours are busy. While the resort's setting feels slightly remote, it's still walkable or a short drive to nearby amenities. Multiple shops and restaurants serving Italian, burgers, Dominican, and international cuisines are within a 15-minute walk, while golf, shopping, and a pharmacy are all within a five- to 10-minute drive. Coco Bongo, the famed nightclub with Las Vegas-style entertainment, is 15 minutes away by car. An adventure park with mountain bike trails, zip lines, Zorbing, and a paintball field is a 20-minute drive from the resort. Isla Saona, a gorgeous beach-rimmed island teeming with starfish, requires an hour drive to reach plus a half-hour boat ride. Santo Domingo, the country’s UNESCO-listed capital, is a two-and-a half hour drive away. Budget 25 minutes to reach Punta Cana International Airport.

Modern and attractive, featuring seating areas, daily-refreshed minibars, and balconies with whirlpool tubs

By all-inclusive standards in resort-packed Punta Cana, the Secrets Royal Beach has fresh and attractive rooms, even if they aren't entirely exciting. All are spacious, and include details like gray walls, textured headboards, separate seating areas, and pops of mauve and brown in the soft furnishings. The subtle ocean-inspired art on the walls pulls the look together in a beachy, if restrained, way. King or double beds are available, with white-on-white comforters and lacy bed runners. The private balconies or terraces with garden, pool, ocean, or partial ocean views are a highlight, and the outdoor whirlpool tubs are a nice bonus. However, keep in mind that some balconies overlook the kid-filled pools at the neighboring resort. Some rooms walk directly out to the pool.

All rooms feature flat-screen TVs with cable channels, DVD players, Bluetooth-enabled iPod docks, coffeemakers with free coffee, and minibars stocked with beer, soda, juice, and water. The minibars are filled once daily and are included in rates. Air-conditioning is provided and Wi-Fi is free. Decent-sized closets hold safes, irons, ironing boards, and umbrellas. Bathrooms have multi-toned marble floors, marble vanities with dual sinks, and glass-walled stand-up showers. Bathroom floors will likely be flooded by the time you step out of the shower, owing to their poor design. All bathrooms include scales, hairdryers, and illuminated beauty mirrors as well. The toiletry list is comprehensive and includes shampoo, body wash, bar soap, shaving kits, vanity kits, sewing kits, shoe polish sponges, shower caps, combs, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Secrets' Preferred Club rooms are a tad bigger, have more toiletries, and premium minibars.

Gorgeous beach, three pools, multiple restaurants and bars, plus shared amenities at neighboring Now Larimar

Secrets Shares most of its amenities with Now Larimar, its family-friendly sister property next door. That can be a bit of inconvenience, though the property still has a solid number of adult-only options on-site. Secrets' beach is long, wide, and absolutely stunning. The soft sand is dotted with lounge chairs, thatched umbrellas, and has a beach volleyball court and a beachfront ping-pong table. Food and drink service is available and included in rates. Free non-motorized water sports include stand-up paddle boards, wind-surfing boards, kayaks, and Hobie Cat catamarans. Free introductory sailing classes are available upon request. Kite-boarding equipment and lessons are also available for a fee. Secrets offers free snorkeling equipment and free introductory scuba classes in the pool.

Secret’s three freshwater pools include an ambling lazy-river-style waterway, an activity pool, and a swish Preferred Club pool with hammocks and lots of lounge chairs. The latter is only available to Preferred Club guests, keeping it a bit more peaceful. That may be worth the upgrade, as the activity pool can get crowded and the blaring beats on offer all day long might be too much for some guests. Additionally, the ease of bar access at the main pools mean that things are boozy as the day progresses. You may also have to fight for lounge chairs. Premium domestic and international liquor, wine, and beer are -- of course -- part of Secrets' rates.

The resort's five restaurants get mixed reviews, and include buffet and a la carte options. Reservations are only required at the teppanyaki table at Himitsu, the Asian eatery. While the no-reservations policy sounds nice in theory, it means that wait times can be long in peak season. Other on-site restaurants include La Riviera, a beachfront buffet option, and Seaside Grill, an alfresco option with an international menu. Portofino serves Italian cuisine and Oceana has seafood, though there's a formal dress code at the latter. Multiple bars are found throughout the property, and dining and drinking at the neighboring Now Larimar resort are included in Secrets' rates. You'll find nighttime entertainment there as well.

Other amenities at Now Larimar include a spa, multiple pools, a business center, and meeting rooms. Unfortunately, this means you'll have to contend with that property's family-friendly vibe (read: kids). Now Larimar also has a gym, basketball court, and multiple tennis courts. Secrets' rates also include free parking and free Wi-Fi. Upgraded Preferred Club packages include extras like private check-in, a member's only lounge and restaurant, upgraded minibars and room-service menus, and free daily newspapers.
