Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

  • Well-appointed rooms with high ceilings and planked wooden flooring
  • Rooms have old-world touches such as clawfoot tubs and minibars hidden in steamer trunks
  • Popular restaurant and bar with several rooms, each with a unique style and vibe
  • Centrally located within Manhattan and close to many subway lines
  • 24-hour fitness center
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • 24-hour room service from the hotel's buzzed-about restaurant
  • Pet-friendly
  • Free bike rentals (up to 3 hours)

Cons

  • No spa
  • No business center (but the hotel can lend laptops, iPads, printers, and fax machines)
  • Minimum stay required at times
  • No outdoor dining or drinking space (except for private events)

Bottom Line

Centrally located near Madison Square Park, The Nomad (which shares its name with the surrounding neighborhood north of Madison Square Garden) is a luxurious, impeccably designed hotel with attentive service but limited features (there's no spa or business center). The hotel's focal point is its eponymous bar and restaurant, featuring five separate-but-connected spaces that sprawl along the ground floor. Guests can order cocktails in the cozy, book-lined Library or order brunch in the sun-filled Atrium room, though they should be prepared for price tags that match the high level of style. The 168 guest rooms are luxurious (there are Sferra linens, Frette towels, and robes), and successfully evoke a bygone era with Persian rugs, old maps, and antique-looking fixtures. Hip travelers who are willing to sacrifice luxury (without sacrificing a popular scene) should consider the Ace Hotel just around the corner, which offers more amenities -- multiple bars, a popular coffee shop, and more common space in which to socialize -- at an often lower price.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Location

Central Manhattan location in the newly coined NoMad neighborhood, though the immediate surroundings aren't particularly eye-catching.

The immediate NoMad ("north of Madison Square Park") neighborhood isn't half as stylish as the hotel itself, filled with knock-off watch, jewelry, and fragrance emporiums. But the gem-like Madison Square Park is just a few blocks to the south, and several attractions are within short walking distance, including the Empire State Building. It's easy to hail a taxi just outside the hotel (the doorman will help), and the N/R subway line is just outside the door. Those who would rather stay downtown will find that the luxurious Greenwich Hotel in TriBeCa has a similar vibe.

  • 6-minute walk to the 1 subway line
  • 7-minute walk to the F, M subway lines
  • 6-minute walk to the 6 subway line
  • 3-minute walk to Madison Square Park
  • 6-minute walk to Eataly, a popular Italian grocery and restaurant emporium
  • 9-minute walk to Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, and the many subway lines found there
  • 11-minute walk to Union Square
  • 13-minute walk to Bryant Park
  • 22-minute walk to Rockefeller Center or 11 minutes by subway
  • 31-minute walk to Central Park or 14 minutes by subway
  • 14 minutes by subway to Ground Zero and the Freedom Tower
  • 17 minutes by subway to Wall Street

 Eco-Friendly

New York's first LEED-certified renovated hotel

The NoMad is housed in a 12-story 1903 Beaux-Arts building, so it's impressive that the building was able achieve LEED certification (silver level) when renovating.
