Colonial manor with historic charm on a private acre
An ivy-lined driveway winding past tall pines and leafy trees arrives at the three-story Applewood Inn, dating back to the turn of the century. The bright red colonial home with clean white trim is surrounded by lawns and gardens, where guests can relax at shaded tables and chairs. Inside, the inn has been carefully decorated with patterned rugs, lacy curtains, and antique wooden furniture, including a beautiful grand piano and grandfather clock in the parlor. The innkeepers have maintained much of the original décor and added to the unique family heirlooms throughout -- breakfast is served with WWII-era silverware. The long dining room table, flanked by a cabinet of trinkets and fine china plates lining the walls, looks like a quintessential Southern home -- which is how The Applewood feels in every corner and airy porch (there are at least three, all equipped with plenty of chairs and a swing).

Many guests of The Applewood choose to drive to downtown Asheville (five minutes) rather than walk (15 to 20 minutes), but the walk is pleasant, through the charming and historic Montford neighborhood and past many delightful cafes and restaurants. The Inn sits on its own private acre-and-a-half of land a block away from the relatively bustling Montford Avenue and Montford Park. Asheville Regional Airport is just over 20 minutes away by car, the University of North Carolina at Asheville campus is about a 15-minute walk, and Haywood Park in the middle of downtown Asheville is about a 20-minute walk.

There are five suites to choose from, as well as the stand-alone Cortland Cottage. All are immaculately clean, warm, and welcoming with charming B&B-style: painted iron or wood-framed beds, leather or floral-upholstered armchairs, patterned rugs, doilies, and antiques. Each room has a flat-screen TV, DVD player, and iPod dock, plus special touches like fresh flowers, bathrobes, and handmade lavender and oatmeal soap. Daily turndown service includes chocolates on pillows. All rooms have private bathrooms with shower/tub combos. Some have fireplaces and private balconies with Adirondack chairs. The Cortland Cottage is the most private option, located 30 feet away from the house and equipped with a two-person bathtub, mini-fridge/freezer, wet bar, and coffeemaker.
