  • Only one on-site restaurant (though it's reported to be Key West's best)

  • Most amenities are at its sister property in Key West, the Westin
  • No pets allowed

Bottom Line

This 40-room resort caters to the upscale traveler with luxurious, beach-chic cottages and high-end amenities. It is located on Sunset Key, a residential island off Key West, and is affiliated to the Westin Key West, with which it shares some features, such as the fitness center and the restaurants (though only guests of Sunset Key can use the on-site amenities; Westin guests do not have access to them). The hotel itself has wonderful amenities, including a lovely pool, a gorgeous (though somewhat rocky) beach with palm trees and clear, calm waters, and a pleasant spa. Its location, though idyllic and exclusive, might be somewhat inconvenient for travelers who want to be close to shops and restaurants (the hotel only has one eatery on-site).

On Sunset Key, a residential island a 7-minute boat ride from Key West

Map of Sunset Key Cottages, a Luxury Collection Resort, Key West

Sunset Key Cottages is located on Sunset Key, an exclusive island off Key West. There are no businesses on the key, only upscale residences, a couple of docks, and lovely beaches. It is only accessible by boat, and the trip from the Westin, its sister property on Key West, takes about seven minutes.

Key West is the westernmost of the Florida Keys, and is definitely the most convenient if what you’re looking for is nightlife, as well as great diving, shops, restaurants, and decent beaches -- all within a few blocks. It can feel like a bit of a tourist trap with its tacky bars, hordes of cruise ship passengers, and T-shirt shops, but it’s one of the few keys that has historic sites to visit. On the literary side, Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams spent a big part of their lives here, and their homes have been turned into museums.

  • 10-minute drive to Key West International Airport
  • 69-minute drive to The Florida Keys Marathon Airport
  • 7-minute ferry ride to Westin Key West Resort; ferry leaves every 30 minutes, or upon request after 2 a.m.

Distances from the Westin Key West Resort, where the Guest Cottages ferry lands:

  • 1-minute walk to the Key West Museum of Art and History
  • 2-minute walk to the Key West Shipwreck Museum
  • 2-minute walk to the famous Sloppy Joe’s Bar, supposedly Hemingway’s favorite
  • 2-minute walk to Mallory Square, where the famous Sunset Celebration takes place
  • 2-minute walk to the art galleries, shops, restaurants and nightlife along Duval Street
  • 12-minute walk to the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center, with exhibits about local fauna and flora
  • 12-minute walk to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum
  • 5-minute drive or a 20-minute walk to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park and Beach
  • 21-minute walk or a 5-minute drive to the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory
  • 8-minute drive to Higgs Beach, a favorite among the gay community
  • 8-minute drive to the Key Plaza, Conch Plaza and Overseas Market shopping centers
