West Side YMCA

For visitors on a budget who want a prime New York City location, the 600-room West Side YMCA could do the job. The Upper West Side hostel provides minimum frills: expect dorm-style rooms and shared hallway bathrooms. There's free Wi-Fi and a small cafe, but the real highlight here is proximity to Central Park, Columbus Circle, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Museum of Natural History, and Times Square, all while staying in one of New York's most desirable neighborhoods. A cozy lounge and Medieval-style architecture, plus epic views of Central Park, add overall ambiance. The West Side Y's expansive fitness facilities -- which are open to guests and local residents with Y memberships -- include exercise rooms, a basketball court, an indoor running track, two swimming pools, and scheduled classes.

Leo House

Located right on 23rd Street, in the heart of Manhattan's vibrant Chelsea neighborhood, this Catholic guesthouse has been welcoming visitors of all faiths to its clean, simple rooms since the 1920s. Rooms are small and straightforward, without frills, and the renovated ones have en-suite showers. A healthy and affordable breakfast is served each morning for a nominal fee, a backyard garden offers a welcome place to rest after a day out, and laundry facilities are available. One of the most reasonably priced lodging options in Lower Manhattan, the Leo House is a great option for those who want to explore the city from a prime location.

Hotel Hugo
525 Greenwich St, Greenwich St and Spring St

Opened in 2014, the Hotel Hugo is a stylish, upscale 122-room boutique property located on the far west side of SoHo in the newly coined Hudson Square neighborhood. Architect Marcello Pozzi's design pairs a downtown industrial style with sleek maritime-inspired interiors. Rooms are finished with polished walnut, shiny chrome fixtures, and Hudson River views, evoking the feeling of staying on a well-heeled Italian yacht. A rooftop bar and nightclub delivers two floors of lounge space and panoramic city and river views.

Carlton Arms Hotel

The Carlton Arms is a funky, art-driven 46-room budget hotel with unique, but very basic, rooms and few amenities. Part hotel, part hostel, some of the rooms come with private baths, the rest share showers and water closets on their designated floor. The hotel's location on the corner of busy Third Avenue and the quiet, pedestrian-only section of East 25th Street, is convenient to some of Manhattan's most desirable areas --Gramercy, Madison Square Park, the Flatiron District, the Empire State Building, and Union Square.

Belvedere Hotel

The 345-room, upper-middle-range Belvedere Hotel is located in Midtown West, within easy walking distance of many attractions. Art Deco decor in the public spaces provides an elegant ambience, while the tastefully decorated and spacious rooms have kitchenettes. Features include a large, modern fitness center, a Brazilian steakhouse restaurant, room service, and business services (for a fee). The safe, central Theater District location makes The Belvedere a good choice for both families and business travelers. It's a great value, as rooms are among the best in this price category for this touristy area, but it may also be worth considering the (sometimes slightly pricer) Blakely and Chambers hotels.

Royalton Park Avenue
420 Park Ave S 29th Street

This 249-room hotel with flashy decor, an outdoor pool, and lots of bars became part of the Royalton family in late 2017. The new trendy-looking Park Avenue South outpost adds lots of nightlife to its largely corporate neighborhood, but only time will tell if the owners can successfully reprise their hotel homerun.

Mandarin Oriental, New York
80 Columbus Circle at 60th Street

The Mandarin Oriental, New York is one of the most well-thought-out luxury hotels in Manhattan. It's discreetly located above Columbus Circle, on floors 35 through 54 of the Time Warner complex. It's no surprise that celebrities and socialites stay here when they want world-class service, a 75-foot indoor lap pool, Asian-inspired healing spa with a tea lounge, and a modern fitness center. Asiate restaurant features sophisticated cuisine and floor-to-ceiling windows with Central Park views, while The Aviary NYC bar focuses on upscale cocktails. The 244 rooms feature subtly luxe decor and marble bathrooms with soaking tubs. The best views start at the 45th floor (though some Central Park vistas are partially obstructed by the neighboring Trump Tower). Shockingly, there's a daily charge for Wi-Fi. For something just as fashionable, but in a quieter location one block from Central Park, check rates at The Mark.

The Maritime Hotel

Housed in a porthole-window-studded building in trendy Chelsea, the 125-room Maritime Hotel is a charming, upscale property that offers the look of a vintage luxury liner. Large "ship cabin" inspired rooms are spacious for Manhattan and feature teakwood walls and penny-tile bathrooms with rainfall showers. They're packed with amenities, too -- HDTVs, minibars, digital music players, robes, and nice C.O. Bigelow toiletries. The hotel has a chic basement level nightclub and an Italian trattoria with a tapas bar and a Michelin-starred dinner menu. Staff offer concierge service and 24-hour room service, plus pets stay free. Wellness facilities are limited though -- there's a small gym, but no pool or spa. By comparison, Dream Downtown offers more amenities -- like a pool -- but lacks the thematic charm and intimacy of this smaller hotel.

Gild Hall A Thompson Hotel

Gild Hall is far hipper than your average Wall Street business hotel. Friendly service, a hunting lodge-like lobby, and 126 attractively designed rooms with 55-inch flat-screen TVs, Sferra linens, and D.S. & Durga bath products make this a top choice for stylish financiers. But there’s not much after-dark action in the Financial District. Another hip business hotel worth considering is the Andaz Wall Street, which features a striking Rockwell Group design and freebies like lobby snacks, barista coffee, and minibar items.

The Jewel facing Rockefeller Center

The Jewel is a no-frills 135-room boutique hotel boasting a prime Midtown location across from Rockefeller Center. Rooms feature Smart TVs and coffeemakers; some have kitchenettes and pull-out sofas. Floor-to-ceiling windows capture city views, and Terrace rooms have private balconies overlooking St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Radio City Music Hall. Views can also be enjoyed from the adjacent Terrace Club restaurant. The fitness center lacks treadmills, but free Wi-Fi and free bottled water add value. Radio City Apartments is another hidden gem in the bustling Midtown; its rates are slightly lower than The Jewel's, but its rooms are more dated and the hotel lacks a fitness center.
