Creating a semi-circle around Old Center, the Canal Ring is often what people envision when they think of Amsterdam: Narrow canals separated by tree-lined streets and gorgeous buildings. Most of these were formerly the homes of wealthy merchants, but today house hotels, restaurants, antique shops, and museums. This picturesque spot has a wealth of hotels lining its banks, but here are a few of our favorites.
Aptly named, the Canal House Hotel is a sumptuous 23-room boutique towering above one of the area's gorgeous canals. The lovely brick facade suggests something more traditional, but the interior is flashy and fashionable. Swanky rooms are among Amsterdam's most luxurious, and are decked out with rich purple fabrics and dark woods. The Great Room, an upscale lounge and dining space at the Canal House, gives guests access to books and games, and the hotel itself is only minutes away from canal tours, shopping, and local eateries -- all of which you have a birds' eye view of from the hotel. Rooms at this charming mid-range hotel are both rich in historic character and rife with modern amenities, with comfy bedding, flat-screen TVs, and cozy leather arm chairs in a calming monochromatic color palette. The lobby/lounge area at the Hotel V Frederiksplein has funky sculptural pieces (such as a bronze bulldog and deer vases), books, magazines, and a cool 360-degree open fireplace. Ambassade Hotel's lovely brick front is as inviting as its location in the picturesque Canal Ring neighorhood, across from a boat-lined canal. The views from the hotel are simply some of the best in town. The hotel is tasteful and tidy, made up in classic Louis XV/XVI decor and rooms are adorned with rich furnishings, intricate mirrors, and carved furniture. From the sunny breakfast room to the cozy library -- even the Koan Float spa machine -- every space in the Ambassade Hotel is stylish. Each room at The Toren is unique, but all are decorated with the same sophisticated touch combining rich hues, chandeliers, and ceiling paintings. Some have their own private terrace -- a nice perk for summer evening cocktails. For everyone else, there is a cozy bar on-site, and the hotel is affiliated with Christophe -- an acclaimed restaurant around the corner that delivers directly to guest rooms. The Dylan is a stylish, upscale boutique featuring a cozy lounge, two bars, and a lovely courtyard with heat lamps. But the real highlight here is the Michelin-star Vinkeles restaurant, which serves contemporary French cuisine in an exclusive space with just a handful of tables. The 41 rooms at The Dylan are split into six different styles, ranging from lofts with cathedral ceilings to all-white rooms to Asian-inspired spaces. All rooms have high-end amenities including Bose sound systems, stocked minibars, and Zenology toiletries. The Hotel Pulitzer is a charming luxury property made up of a block of 25 restored 17th and 18th century canal houses, and is full of historic details. The hotel has a grill restaurant, bar, and 24-hour room service. Besides having a location in one of the most picturesque areas of Amsterdam, the hotel is also within easy walking distance of popular sights such as Dam Square, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Red Light District.
