1

Maui Coast Hotel

Kihei, Maui

Located in Kihei, the cluster of budget hotels, shops, and affordable restaurants that's 10 miles from Wailea's pricey resorts, the 265-room Maui Coast is the island's best value. The closest beach is a five-minute walk, and guests will likely want to head into town to dine. But the clean rooms have modern furnishings, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves. The laundry facilities are free, and a fun poolside bar hosts live music at night.

2

Ka’anapali Beach Hotel

Lahaina, Maui

A modest property that prides itself on being the "Most Hawaiian Resort," the 430-room Kaanapali Beach Hotel sits right on Kaanapali's four-mile beach. More affordable than many nearby resorts, this low-key hotel has a great tiki bar, free Hawaiian activities, and nightly live entertainment. The only downside is that with renovations still underway, you're rolling the dice on room quality.

3

Royal Lahaina Resort

Lahaina, Maui

A 15-minute walk from Kaanapali's main strip, the family-owned 350-room Royal Lahaina has what the Kaanapali mega-resorts lack -- a quiet, isolated beachfront. Its amenities -- three small pools, a nightly luau, and 11 tennis courts -- don't rival those at the mega-resorts, but this is still a great pick for peace and relaxation. The newer Tower Rooms, while more expensive, have stunning ocean views.

4

Best Western Pioneer Inn

Lahaina, Maui

Not your typical Best Western, this century-old, 34-room inn is in the heart of the historic whaling town of Lahaina, now a center of art galleries, ice cream parlors, and casual restaurants. Service is minimal, the nearest beach is a five-minute drive, and rooms are small and dated, but it's still a clean and comfortable budget option with a great location across from the Lahaina Harbor.

5

Aston Maui Hill

Kihei, Maui

The Aston Maui Hill's 140 apartments, while neither modern nor stylish, all have full kitchens, washers and dryers, free Internet, and enough space to sleep a family or other group (the biggest units fit eight). The pool is small, there's no fitness center, and the popular beaches are across a busy street. But you'd be hard-pressed to find a condo for this low a price anywhere else in Maui.

6

Hotel Wailea

Wailea, Maui

More affordable than most hotels in upscale Wailea (where rain rarely falls), Hotel Wailea isn't directly on the beach, but its 72 kitchen-equipped, one-bedroom suites cost considerably less than a more traditional guest room at most of the nearby resorts. Plus, Maui's best beaches, retail shops, and golf courses are just a 10-minute drive.
